When Protege 4 starts up, it presents a dialog box saying "Welcome to Protege" and offering several links as alternative selections. By clicking on one of these links, you can cause Protege 4 to create or open (and load) an ontology.
Create new OWL Ontology
Click on this link to create a new OWL ontology. You will then be presented with a series of dialogs:
- Ontology URI - unique name for this ontology
- Physical Location - file path for the local copy
- Ontology Format - serialization format for storage, eg:
Open OWL Ontology
Click on this link to specify an existing OWL ontology (on a local file system) and open it for inspection or editing. You will then be presented with file-system browser dialog, allowing you to select the desired ontology.
Open OWL Ontology from URI
Click on this link to specify an existing OWL ontology (on the Internet or a local intranet) and open it for inspection or editing. You will then be presented with a URI selection dialog, allowing you to enter a URI or select a bookmarked URI.
Open from the TONES repository
Click on this link to specify an existing OWL ontology (on the Internet-based [Pr4_UG_mi_Glossary#TONES] repository) and open it for inspection or editing. You will then be presented with the "Open from TONES" dialog, allowing you to select a URI.

Click on a link below this header to specify an recently-used OWL ontology (on a local file system) and open it for inspection or editing.
