Since late mid 1980's have been very interested in understanding large complex IT systems. Early CASE tool use eventually led to working with vendors on reverse engineering tools. Goal was to develop a knowledge base using automated parsing engines to populate data structures that could be subsequently queried and or graphically depicted.

Current interest is on tools to capture data and relationships from technology level as well as business and data architectures.
